A variety of small mammals, nesting birds, lizards, spiders, and other insects all feed on adult butterflies or their larva. This is called the “chain of life”. As much as we enjoy and look forward to our butterfly babies and their parents, we must also remember all life depends on other forms of life. 3. Butterflies are an indicator species. That means they are among the first organisms to show a negative reaction to environmental . changes and pollutants. Just like a canary in a coal mine, butterflies can help alert us to problems in our local environment that may affect our own health and well-being.
